Alternative Printing: Van Dyke Brown

October 8th, 2014  |  Published in Other News and Events

Date:
October 12, 2014

Time:
10am – 5pm

Location:
Cleveland Print Room
The ArtCraft Building
2550 Superior Ave
Cleveland, OH 44114

The emphasis of this class will be on creating photographic images using the Van Dyke Brown process of coating various paper surfaces with light-sensitive chemicals and using the sun for exposure.

The Van Dyke Brown process, invented in 1889, yields a tonal, rich brown print when contact-printed using a UV light source. For this class we will be making negatives from your digital images sent to us prior to the class using inkjet transparencies. Further manipulation can be achieved by incorporating various media like watercolor, pastel, or colored pencil once the prints are dry.

Students can also bring objects (think photograms) and film negatives to contact-print onto the Van Dyke-coated paper.

Watercolors, colored pencils and pastels will be available for student use on their prints.

Cost for the class is $135 for CPR members, $150 for non-members. There will also be a materials fee of $35 payable at class time. Students will be contacted prior to the class with info on sending images for negatives.

Please contact us at 216-401-5981 or info@clevelandprintroom.com to register for this class. This class requires preregistration as there are transparency negatives that need to be ready prior to the class.

Class instructor is Amelia Maslen, our new Education Coordinator at CPR. She is a recent photography graduate from Alfred University School of Art & Design in New York where she focused on traditional photography and alternative processes. She is an Ohio native.
