The world of digital publishing is not new to a labor market based on independent contracting. However, freelance, independent contracting, and temporary “flexible” work now account for 30-50% of all US jobs, and this recent shift in our economy to more flexible work is bringing with it new issues in the labor market. What are the economic consequences for independent contractors? What impact does this have on upward mobility, retirement or healthcare? Currently, cities, states, and the federal government are proposing legislation to deal with labor rights for freelance workers. This conversation will dive into the evolving gig economy and the effects on the digital publishing labor market.
