Polaroid Lift Workshop

March 13th, 2017  |  Published in Other News and Events

Sunday, March 19th from 12PM to 3PM

In this popular workshop, you will learn the art of making Polaroid transfers and lifts. A Polaroid lift (or emulsion transfer) is when the emulsion layer is removed from a sheet of instant film and then transferred to a different surface. Class participants can take turns with a Polaroid Land camera to turn these photos into effective lifts of their own artwork. We will also be using the Impossible Project Lab so that you can also make transfers using images from your smart phone.

With the Impossible Project Lab, we will be developing real photos from your smartphone screen. By downloading the free Impossible app, you will be able to connect your device to the Instant Lab Universal, so you can make real photos step-by-step. Once your real instant photo is ready, use the App’s built-in scanner to transfer it onto your digital device and have it transfer in physical form to an actual Polaroid photograph!

The cost of the workshop is $65 for members and $75 for non-members. You will receive three lifts with a $5 cost for each additional transfer. Sign up by emailing the Cleveland Print Room at: nikki@clevelandprintroom.com or calling 216-802-9441 to reserve your spot today!

The class will be taught by Nikki Follen who is also an instructor at Baldwin Wallace University.

The world of digital publishing is not new to a labor market based on independent contracting. However, freelance, independent contracting, and temporary “flexible” work now account for 30-50% of all US jobs, and this recent shift in our economy to more flexible work is bringing with it new issues in the labor market. What are the economic consequences for independent contractors? What impact does this have on upward mobility, retirement or healthcare? Currently, cities, states, and the federal government are proposing legislation to deal with labor rights for freelance workers. This conversation will dive into the evolving gig economy and the effects on the digital publishing labor market.

Speaker Bio:
Jenny Hawkins is a Visiting Assistant Professor of Economics at the Weatherhead School of Management at Case Western Reserve University. She taught at Oberlin College for three years and enjoyed Cleveland so much, she was able to stay through a position at Case. She completed her PhD in Economics at The University of Arizona. Her research is in microeconomic theory where she looks at antitrust and regulation, as well as topics in law and economics. Currently her research is looking at the gig economy, the topic for today, as well as antitrust policies during the Great Depression. She teaches courses in labor economics, law & economics, and business strategies.
